Odyssey Oil Spill, 1988

off the coast of Nova Scotia, Canada in 1988 the Liberian tanker the Odyssey Filled with harsh oil split in two an sank letting all the oil pour into the water, also catching fire. The oil destroyed the habitat for many animals.

The Deepwater Horizon oil spill

In 2010 there was panic when a spill stemmed from a sea-floor oil gusher which caused an explosion of  Deepwater Horizon. The Gusher was capped but the oil devastated the ocean habitat killing many creatures. Many Sea birds were drowned , because when they would land on the water there wings would get gummed up with sticky black oil and the birds would drown.

Love canal - New York

Love Canal is a superfund site in Niagara Falls, New York. It has held 21,000 tons of toxic waste emptied there by Hooker Chemical. The canal itself combines  Bergholtz Creek to the north and the Niagara River one-quarter mile (400 m) to the south.

The Duwamish River

In Seattle, WA there is a river called the Duwamish River which is a superfund site meaning it requires a large amount of federal money to go towards cleaning it up. the water itself isn't as bad as the sediment which includes PBC's which can cause certain cancers, arsenic and lead all very toxic chemicals

The Drifting Oil Project

The Drifting Oil Project is a project that helps make people aware of different oil spills and other terrible things in the ocean like the north pacific gyre that is as big or bigger than Texas and other small or big oil spills and other things.

The north pacific gyre

Here's some more information, thanks blackgold for the intro on it

The gyre is created by swirling currents in the northern section of the pacific ocean. The swirling current causes trash to be pulled out into the middle of the north pacific causing a huge mass of trash to form bigger than the size of Texas . There are also bits of microplastic which to some fish can look like the plankton that they eat, when they eat it, then a larger fish eats ten of them, then the larger fish ends up with ten pieces of microplastic in them . When a shark eats 20 of these fish they can end up a large mass of plastic inside them. This is the north pacific gyre .

Texas In The Ocean

I don't have any pictures of this but a massive pile of trash in the middle of the ocean bigger than Texas it's been pulled together by whirlpools it full of broken down plastic bags and other non-biodegradable types of trash woven together by each other.

About the Oil

I don't know much about this spill but, I know it's bad.
If you don't know this the oil floats on the water and will be most commonly in these colors:
Orange-red
Multi-Colored  (in light) and clear (in dark)
The oil kills a lot of the marine life and like:
-Jellyfish
-Fish
-Plankton (but u can't see them)
-and any other wildlife that swims
